Car Audio Systems

It 'hard to imagine a car without an audio system. Car audio systems are important for all owners of cars and a dizzying assortment available to choose from. A car audio system is a combination of components such as head units, amplifiers, speakers and auxiliary input devices. All this work to complement each other and do not make sense on a stand-alone.

The main unit in a system like the brain and the central processing unit. Monitoring andoperations in relation to volume, bass, EQ, etc., are made with this device. There are different types of unit. Some can only cassette, CD or radio play, while others allow all these choices. Advanced equipment can also be a lot of CDs at a time to keep and provide shuttling between them. Speakers are obviously important, if we want to hear anything. However, the different types available, such as the type of cone or ribbon. Each has its advantages. The position of the speakers also makes adifference. Then there are amplifiers that increase or enhance the signals to make them feel. They also come in various configurations, including mono, stereo or multichannel.

Car audio systems can vary from basic to an end very high and funky designs. A basic system costs less and can get a good sound quality as part of a standard make. Some decisions also depend on the intended use. If you think you do not have a tape player needs, but a CD player, so invest in agood quality CD player rather than a combination of low cost. For a basic system, you can only go for the front speakers and avoid back. Advanced models are available in compact size, with or without remote control and all other functions in one might think.

Depending on your budget and personal preference, you can build a unit, or buy an all-in-one system. Identified as may be more expensive but come with a warranty, and are easy to maintain. A couple of things like speakers, you should buythe standard, reliable and produce. If the audio quality is low or high, but has also saved money mess.

Pleased So Far

Review Date: April 8, 2010
Reviewer: Larry E. Huhn, Oregon
I just installed my new RKi8400 and I am impressed so far. I was concerned about the installation because I have read reviews talking about the oversize face (?) and other installation problems. The actual installation could not have been easier. I had my old one out and the new RKi8400 in my VW Eurovan in about 15 minutes. It does stick out from the face of the dash a little more than the previous unit but I don't that as a problem.
Much better than the RK8200. This one works.

This car stereo has lovely, innovative gadgets that work quite well. The previous model, the RK8200, was utterly crap. But all issues are dealt with in the RKi8400.

Connection of the faceplate now uses a strong magnet to keep it in place. A clean, simple and strong connection. Also, the jog wheel has a more professional design, while frequent updates keep the firmware fixed.

Connection with the i-pod is smooth and fast. No lag at all. The sound is great, it displays all play-lists and album covers. It also supports text for languages other than English, just like the i-pod itself (i.e Greek).

Voice recognition has come a long way with this stereo. You no more need to "train" it to recognize contacts when you call them. It has a built-in voice recognition system and it's quite accurate!

Only problem is, you sometimes need to really shout out the name in order for the system to receive it. And the volume for the telephone call instructions and the radio is the same, which can be annoying if you want the radio turned down low but decide to make a call, because then you can't hear the instructions.

Other than that, I am very happy. I have only had it for a month and I hope it continues to work as well as it does. A last positive aspect is the service I receive from Parrot whenever I need something. In Europe at least, they are very helpful.
So Far So Good...

I have had this unit installed in my car for a couple of weeks now. The authorized Parrot rep that did the install (and who apparently knew what he was doing) had no trouble at all, and the unit looks clean installed. If your Parrot installer says he doesn't think it will fit in your car, go to Parrot's website, and find another installer.

Having used the unit for a couple of weeks, I am very happy with most of the features. The bluetooth works seamlessly, and it should, considering other manufacturers like Alpine and Pioneer use Parrot for bluetooth technology. I have had no complaints from the people on the other end of the line, in fact, most of them can't believe I'm in a car. My wife owns the Minikit by Parrot, and she says the bluetooth works great for her as well. I use the radio with a 3G iPhone, which works fantastic because the music streams through the bluetooth connection. For some reason I have had trouble getting Pandora radio to stream through the bluetooth, not sure why, but I guess I could use the aux in if I wanted to listen to Pandora.

The radio stations (particularly the AM ones) start out snowy when I first turn on the car, but once I change the station and then change back it clears up. Not sure why it does that, and since that's an easy fix I wouldn't consider that a deterrent to buy the unit. The unit did freeze once on me when streaming music through the bluetooth and trying to use the aux jack on the phone simultaneously (just experimentin'), but resumed working with a reboot.

One more pro with this unit is the fact that you can update the software whenever Parrot releases a new version, so hopefully any bugs will be worked out with later releases.

All in all, this is a clean looking unit, that does what it says it will do, and is reasonably priced. I wouldn't recommend it to my grandpa, but you might like it, especially if you have a later generation iPhone (3G or 3GS). I'm giving it four stars because of few hiccups I've experienced so far, but if Parrot releases a software update that fixes those I would give it five.
Wish I could write a real review...

I can't honestly say I've tried this product. The problem is that although I bought one and it's sitting next to me right now, it will not fit into any of the 3 cars that I own. The face is significantly wider than a standard single-DIN head unit. I'm not sure how that simple fact made it past Parrot's Quality Control department or the myriad reviewers that I've read. It would have been nice to know this before ordering. Parrot's website makes a vague mention of various adapters you might need. Well, to fit it into any of the cars I own, I either need a new dash panel, or in the case of one of them, an entirely new and wider dash/console.

I called several Parrot-certified installers in the area, and not only did they not have any experience with the RKi8400, they didn't seem at all interested in helping me solve my problem.

Too bad. This thing claims to have all the features I need and none of the features I don't. It's perfect for me. But I'll be sending it back to Amazon unless Parrot comes up with some answers fast.
if the radio actually powers up - it is OK

Review Date: March 31, 2010
Reviewer: Narunas Bukauskas, Brooklyn, NY USA
I received mine through Amazon reseller - arrived as promised, on time and as described.
3 stars are meant for overall experience - i.e radio died 6 days after install and it took more than a week to get a replacement from Parrot. (reseller absolved it's responsibility for the dead radio with quoting some fine print - so read it before you buy).

install: standard - the faceplate is larger than normal, but fit my van OK. check your dash if you have some extra room around the standard single DIN slot. Microphone went in fine, no accessories connected and car antenna went in with an adapter - I have a short euro sized antenna lead.

function: OK - If you expect a good "hands free" performance - this is the one to get! I used G1, Droid and Nexus One to connect - all telephony worked acceptable, with phone book sync and voice commands. 5 Stars here.

As Bluetooth Audio devices: some glitches, disconnects and even freezes that required the removal of the faceplate to reset the radio. Overall acceptable - 4.5 stars

As a AM/FM radio - very good! Finally was able to hear some quality from my lacking outside antenna! 5 stars

Appearance - dated: The little screen color schemes, fonts and wallpapers scream mid 2k - the buttons stick a bit on the faceplate, feel cheap.

Updates - One major advantage of this is the ability to upgrade the OS - I quickly got the latest software patch directly from Parrot and installed it. I run only Linux, so Mac instructions worked fine, no need to get the bloated Parrot updater, even for windows. The radio appeared to function better, more stable in Bluetooth as well.

Usability - I used this with everything but the IPod/IPhone - all as described. Parrot radio through Bluetooth as well as media playback from the phones. USB stick was fine - never did get to see the album art on the radio. Have not tried playback from the SD card. Updated the available wallpapers through Bluetooth push - all is well.
Have to give usability 1 star - since for the last week or so I did not get to used the radio. It died without any warning, would not power up, checked the fuse in the back, the van fuse for the radio - all OK. The faceplate has a mini USB port that I have plugged into a pc, just for curiosity, the faceplate powered up and appeared to await updates. After radio died - the faceplate did not powered up on plugging into USB - so I assumed it was dead for good. Contacted Parrot for replacement, which is on the way now for over a week.

Buggy radio- but overall possibly the best hands free device that I have seen.

USB and AUX on Front Panel. Seems like a solid unit.

Review Date: September 27, 2007
Reviewer: D. W. Dallam, California, USA
I'm fairly happy with this unit's performance. No head unit will have everything you want, but this came close in some areas, nailed it in some areas, and was mediocre in others. I needed a DD unit for my car because the stock unit is DD. I single DIN unit would have looked spartan in the dash.

PRO:
1. Has both USB and AUX in on front panel.

2. Has a clean built in amp at 20wts RMS and a 24 bit DAC converter.

3. Has subwoofer control in panel allowing you to adjust what DBs go to the sub, such as 185, 90, and I think something like 45, which is explained in the manual, and this is read out on the LCD panel as High, Medium, and Low. Both Crutchfield and JVC said the additional Bass, Treble, and Midtone adjustments DO NOT affect the subwoofer out. This means that you can use your stock speakers in your car as midrange and treble and line out the bass to your subwoofer. Or, adjust a smaller amount of bass to your other speakers while not affecting the subwoofer bass output. This is exactly what I wanted--electronic crossovers adjustable in the deck itself.

EDIT May 30th: This is not true. The bass adjustment will increase both the bass in the stock speakers as well as the subwooofer, but the crossover samples down how much bass you get in the stock speakers. I wanted the unit to leave the stock speaker's bass, midrange, and treble separate from the woofer bass adjustment. Still, it does a good job of crossing over the stock speaker and I don't feel this limited the sound of the system too much--except that you don't get enough MID bass in your stock bass speakers for some songs. Not a show stopper at all.

4. BT unit is small and self contained with no power cord. It has a single DIN plug that plugs into the back of the deck, and that is it. My stereo installer said it was "nice and easy" and that it saved me about 20.00 bucks on install.

5. The BT is 99.00 compared to Sony BT devices at 200.00.

6. The deck's lights do dim when I turn on my headlights, just like it should. You can turn this on or off in the deck itself.

7. It has everything that I mentioned plus XM, Sirius, BT with 99.00 adapter, plays .wma 9, .aac, MP3, .wav files from my SD card plugged into a card reader and directly into the front USB panel. I have my entire CD collection in 160bit aac on one 8GB SDHC card at my finger tips. It does not play DVDs with music, but that was what I traded for the front panel USB and AUX--I never insert a disk anymore, thus I rarely need a CD player, much less a DVD player.

8. Allows you to name radio stations. Some other features that are uninteresting to me, but there if you want them.

9. Seems well built and quite when you insert a disk. Buttons feel positive and firm and the knobs feel like quality.

10. Huge knob in the center of the unit for volume and other adjustments after you hit call buttons, such as bass, treble, etc. It's a control knob of sorts, plus volume.

11. Relatively cheap compared to other units that DON'T have both AUX and USB ports on the front, which is rare. I picked it up for 180US plus 99US for the BT adaptor.

12. Professional stereo installer said he didn't like the "fancy" nature of the LCD, but the technical aspects of the deck he said were "nice" and "surprising" and "up there with the best Alpines and Pioneers that we carry."

CON:
1. Not really intuitive operation, although you get used to it and it's very easy, just not laid out as well as it could be. Random, Loudness, and several other buttons should be on the front panel, not in mode option buttons or personal settings. For instance, the Sub woofer DB setting is buried under personal settings, while the sub woofer volume is in another push first button where treble and bass are found (but this isn't too much to be concerned about). Too, I would have liked the option of different colored LCDs on the front panel, instead of 6 different analyzer bumping light options--sort of circus. You can turn the dancing analyzer lights completely off, at least.

2. The LCD read out is far too big giving it a sort of adolescent look. If the LCD were about 75% smaller, it could contain much more information (although it does scroll) and look much more professional.

3. The faceplate is not removable--hope you have insurance. It screams "please steal me."

Edited:

I've owned this head unit for around six months now and I guess there are only a couple things that are really annoying. The unit will sometimes not remember where you left off when using the USB port, skipping many folders or songs. You have to name each folder starting with 000, 001, or 01, 02, 03 or the unit can't find some of the songs or folders. Also, you are not suppose to leave the usb reader plugged in when you start the car--which means you are expected to remove it each time. I've never done this and had no problems. So the main thing is that it will sometimes fail to start up where you left off.

Edited 05/27/08:
I've owned this unit for six months now, and I do have two things to report that are VERY unsatisfactory:

1. Bluetooth menu is all but un-navigable.

I can't explain why, it seems random, like pushing buttons in a carnival to get specific menu items up, where sometimes you get the same result with the same series of button pushes and sometimes you don't. Sometimes they come up (following the manual directions) and sometimes they don't. It's VERY frustrating. Last night I needed to pair a new BT phone, and one of the menu items WOULD NOT come up, no matter what--it was the Auto-Answer feature that I wanted to turn on.

After maybe two hours of trying to get this stupid menu item up, I gave up. Tomorrow I'm having the unit uninstalled and sent in for repair. I'm already looking at different units because I don't want to waste my time fiddling with incompetent navigation flaws in this unit.

The first phone I set up after I had the unit installed did go reasonably well, but this time it simply refused to bring up specific menu items. It also kept defaulting to "connect" which means you have to either cycle through the SOURCE button to cancel it, or wait for it to give you an error, then restart the procedure again.

2. Blue Tooth Microphone NOISE!

People are reporting to me that the noise from the BT unit's microphone is horrible, almost to the point they cannot hear me (e.g., "Sounds like you're next to the Los Angeles International Airport!!"). I have the microphone mounted right next to the rear view mirror near the headliner. There is no option for noise canceling either, so you're just stuck with poor BT microphone performance.

Last, the BT navigation from the head unit itself, well, good luck. It's about the same level of futility as trying to get the menu to work correctly to pair and set up BT options, as commented above. You'll have a wreck long before you find the number you want.

Voice activation for calling via your phone passes the commands over well, however.

There is something else that pissed me off too: A few of the options available are not defined, such as BT muting. This menu option--in the main menu, not the BT menu--gives you three option, Muting 1, Muting 2, and Off. You won't find what muting 1&2 do, though, simply because whoever wrote the manual decided you didn't need to know--"Just pick one and STFU!"

I actually would not recommend this unit because of the way it skips around the music on the USB drive after you start and stop your car, plus the horrible menu in the BT section. On the other hand, if you don't need BT options and you don't really care if your music skips to a random folder the next time you jump in to listen, it's a pretty good unit.

To be fair, I haven't tried loading up a CD with AAC or MPs files to see if it skipped around after shutdown and startup. I did have a CD loaded with about twenty songs from two different disks and I did not notice it jumping on startup and shutdown.

I also wanted to comment on something I thought was a negative in my first update. You must number the folders with the prefix 01, 02, 03, or 001, 002 and so on. This is actually a decent condition because then you don't have to play the music folders alphabetically. You can group them however you want using the numbering scheme. But then again, if you really do just want an alphabetical listing w/o having to number the folders, you're out of luck. I use a bulk renaming utility on my home computer to set all of the folders and songs up, so it's fast. Most people though don't have the time to figure out bulk naming software in order to do that, which makes the numbering scheme a one by one act of time consuming frustration.

Well, there you have it. I hope that this helps some. You may want to look at a few newer units coming out with this technology, such as Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine and Clarion--the higher end units, not the Target models for 99.00US

I'll have the installers remove the unit. I'll send it in, get it "repaired" and remount the microphone over the visor this time. And that reminds me!

This is another hit against JVC: The warranty is not a replacement unit, but repair ONLY using, at their discretion, refurbished parts! You don't believe me? Get a copy of their warranty and see it in black and white, or call and ask them. I couldn't believe that. The entire warranty is repair, use of refurbished parts (they mean used parts they scavenged off of other systems), and that's that!

So this means I'm out with a hole in my dash for around two weeks.

PS--Check out the Kenwood DPX502. I'm getting that unit today. I did send the JVC back, but only to make JVC repair it for my trouble. A friend of mine who has had a stereo installation business since he was 21 has the DPX502 in both his truck and car and he reports that the unit is flawless and the BT option works perfectly in both cars, with no road noise (We became friends a few months ago when I took my Tacoma in to have an AMP and sub installed, plus talk to him about the JVC unit at his shop. They took it out, tested it, didn't charge me anything, and that's when I asked what other unit he recommended, to which I found the Kenwood installed in both his vehicles). I'll post a review once it's in and I tear into it by testing it's functionality, as I have done here.

Excellent head unit

Reviewer: T. Westerhof, Indianapolis, IN
I have always been a Pioneer or Kenwood guy because you know they are high quality. But I thought I'd take a chance on JVC because this player had everything I was looking for at a great price. I put this head unit into my '06 Mustang GT and with the previously upgraded Infinity Reference speakers I am extremely pleased!

I wanted a Double Din CD/MP3 player with an Aux-In and USB port on the front. Not only did the XG-700 have those options but I loved the user interface. I like the knob for easy volume control and the large buttons buttons. Station presets on the left and other function buttons on the right. The LCD screen has a large and bright readout and the display is very easy to read. The USB option worked quickly and I had not problems plugging my MP3 playter into the Aux-In.

Sound quality is a 100 times better from stock speakers and head unit, of course. Installation was a relative breeze and the fit is perfect.

The only negatives are that the face is not detachable and the display does not dim when the headlights are turned on. The manual basically says the dim option is hit and miss. You can manually dim the display, though.

Basically, I highly recommend this head unit.
Good Head Unit.

Pros:
Plays WMA and MP3 CDRs.
Audio input jack on front of unit.
USB jack on front of unit, just plug a jump drive in and it will play your WMAs and MP3s.
Lots of nice features.
Looks great.
Sounds Great.
Will accept lots of add-ons like blue tooth phone kits and steering wheel controls.

Cons:
Display doesn't have enough characters for song titles but it scrolls ok.
I have a 2004 Silverado and had to custom make brackets and a face plate because the OEM stereo is larger. I am sure they sell brackets and faceplates somewhere but I didn't want to wait to install :P
Great Value for money

JVC Car KWXG700 50W x 4 2-DIN CD Receiver with USB Port
This unit have almost everything you would need on your head unit.
The bluetooth feature for your cellphone works perfect.
The sound quality is very great.
The low points are
(1 ) When you eject the CD the music on usb drive stop temperarily.
(2) The demo take up too much time over the regular display.
(3) The spectrum analizer could be more fancier
(4) The control buttons display is poor at night the dim feature is
connected.
My final rating is 9.5 out of 10 because you will never get another
good head unit with all these feature for this low price on a good
brand like JVC.
Fantastic Stereo!

I got this for my 2003 Pontiac Vibe. It fit perfectly in the double DIN slot, and the red lighting matches my interior lighting. The USB input is the best thing since CDs. I have a ton of music on an 8GB thumb drive, and the drive was only $30. Much better then burning MP3 CDs, especially since changing out the music is as simple as plugging it into your computer and adding and removing files. The buttons are a good size too and I really like the rotary knob. If you take a second to skim the manual then the control layout really makes sense. The plastic and chrome is really nice too, seems to be very high quality. The sound is great too, much better then the old JVC stereo I had in there. If you like red lighting, some really good features, great sound, and a good price then do yourself a favor and buy this stereo.

Good product

I purchased this for my 1985 Camaro. I mounted it under the dash toward the front. I tested it thoroughly on top of the dash and underneath the dash, and it worked exactly the same either place. The dash on this car is made of some kind of urethane, so there is no metal covering it. It works noticeabley better with the amplified wire plugged in. I plugged that wire into my "power-antenna" wire on the radio so that the amp doesn't run when the radio is off. Reception was at least as good as stock antenna. Very happy with the product.

I bought this product so that I could remove the antenna from my 1500 goldwing. It works quite well but has slightly less reception than the stock wip antenna that comes on the goldwings. I felt it was a good buy for the price and the performance is reasonable. I wouldn't buy it if you are looking for boosted performace over stock.
It is fairly small and the cable was of reasonable length.

Clean and clear sound

Review Date: December 14, 2007
Reviewer: Keven Alvarado, texas
I bought this product in hopes of reducing background noise and it definitely worked. I get beautiful sound. At first I thought that my amp was bad.

Before I changed to Monster interconnects, I was getting bad noise when, for example, the fog lights were on or the air conditioning was on high. Talk about embarrassing when you're trying to show off and its hot outside. So I quickly changed to Monster 202 and 204 LN Audio Interconnects and problem solved.

A very tight fit as well, great connectors.

Don't waste money with other products; go with Monster the first time, every time.

I've used other brands before and have gotten distortion even when running them away from power wires but this particular setup I had in my G35 I had to run them parallel to power cables and there was no distortion or whining at all.

Worth the premium!
